Finwe team participated #IndustryHack at Ponsse March 18-20 2016
IndustryHack is a concept where teams spend a weekend to compete for best (industry) hack using resources provided by the hosting company, trying to solve challenges they have named. It is a brilliant idea, executed very professionally, and lots of fun! Also extremely efficient for both the hackers and the hosting company, and generally results to co-operation with some of the teams.
Ponsse is one of the three major makers of harvester machines, globally. The company was founded by Einari Vidgren, who built his first machine at the age of 27 and made such a good work that other loggers wanted to have a similar one. Today, Ponsse is a global company with a fairly large market share, but is still known by its family-oriented Ponsse spirit and is located in a small-ish village, Vieremä. Ponsse invests heavily on R&D, and that shows in their lineup of models, which are, by the way, selling really well!
Finwe team spent a weekend at Vieremä and enjoyed the hospitality of Ponsse. We pitched an idea that involved using 360 still images that were shot & analyzed automatically, and we were selected as one of the finalists (didn’t win, though). During the weekend, we put our cameras on harvester machines that were doing real work in the forest, visited the factory, learned a lot about foresting business and its challenges, built a demo that created automatically Google StreetView -like experience from the forest to the cloud plus a viewer app for the Apple TV, and of course also enjoyed the good company of Ponsse people and other hackers. As one of the finalists, every Finwe team member also got a model of their Scorpion King harvester, which is truly an amazing machine!
