Finwe team participated #IndustryHack at KONE March 11-13 2016
IndustryHack is a concept where teams spend a weekend to compete for best (industry) hack using resources provided by the hosting company, trying to solve challenges they have named. It is a brilliant idea, executed very professionally, and lots of fun! Also extremely efficient for both the hackers and the hosting company, and generally results to co-operation with some of the teams.
KONE is globally one of the top makers of elevators, escalators and automatic doors, and their products are being used daily by more than a billion people. We spent a weekend at Hyvinkää as their guest, learning about people flow and hacking some elevators. Without going too deep into details, the idea that we pitched was based on utilizing 360° video within elevator car (as you probably guessed).
During the weekend, we made a GearVR demo that included a 3D rendered elevator car, 360° videos, and moving hotspots for navigation. We even set up a couple of large TV screens inside an elevator car, playing synchronized 360° video on multiple screens using smartphones that were connected to each other via Bluetooth and to the TVs via Chromecast over Wifi. Finally, everything was packed really tightly into a 3-minute combo that included both the presentation and the demo (had to memorize every word!)
Special thanks go to AirPano, who provided us some fantastic video material to be used in the demo with a very short notice. High-quality video made the demo truly shine, and we got lots of positive feedback about it. All the other teams did a really good job as well, and we met a number of talented people. Our team did not win the competition but we continue discussion with KONE, hoping to realize our vision.
